TURN
OFF UAC (User Account Controls) - In Control Panel, select
User Accounts and Family Safety, User Accounts, and then click Turn
User Account Control on or off. This of course triggers a UAC prompt
that you'll have to answer before you can proceed. But it's a small
price to pay for your freedom ;-) reboot
Automate VISTA Complete PC backups (only in Ultimate orBusiness)
Ultimate
and Business have a "Ghost" like backup
called WINDOWS COMPLETE PC BACKUP that you can
save images to on DVD or a local hard drive (aka a USB external)
no network option or UNC's. To restore to these ghost images boot
of a VISTA DVD, pick Repair Your Computer, select OS, next and via
System Recovery Options choose Windows Image Backup. (FYI
- 14 GIGS on my C:\drive fits one 4.7 GIG backup DVD) If your PC
has no VISTA DVD hit F8 and choose Windows Image Backup.
Windows
Vista uses a new protocol, Link Layer Topology Discovery
(LLTD), for networking. LLTD speeds up the process of connecting
to other devices, and it allows Vista to grab information about
each device and display it in the Network Map. But earlier versions
of Windows lack LLTD
If you upgrade over a previous version of Windows and the
upgrade fails, Windows Vista will restore your previous
version of Windows automatically... thank god.
TIP
- The VISTA DVD has over 19,500 drivers
on it.
Disable
Aero Effects - Right-click your desktop, and select Personalize,
Window Color and Appearance, Open classic appearance properties
for more color options. In the Color scheme list, select any non-Aero
scheme, such as Windows Vista Basic or Windows Vista Standard, and
then click OK
Make
the RUN BOX appear - Right-click the Taskbar, choose Properties,
and click the Start Menu tab. Click the Customize button and you'll
be able to add the Run link--and change the Start Menu in many other
ways as well.
Enable
Windows Flip 3D (in Areo only) Windows-Tab keys
Search's
dirty little secret. By default, it restricts its searches
to a limited set of folders on your hard disk. Search uses an index
to speed up its searches; but Vista indexes only a few folders,
such as your own personal user folder. If you create folders outside
that area, the OS won't index them, and Search won't find them or
their contents. There is a workaround: If you do an Advanced Search
(select Start, Search, and click the Advanced Search down arrow),
you can instruct the tool to look in nonindexed areas; just check
the box next to Include non-indexed, hidden and system files (might
be slow). OR go to Control Panel, System and Maintenance, Indexing
Options. From there, you can add any folders to the index ;-)

Clean
install from VISTA upgrade media? - have not tried
Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and start the setup program.
When prompted to enter your product key, DO NOT enter it. Click
"Next" and proceed with setup. This will install Windows
Vista as a 30-day trial.
When prompted, select the edition of Vista which you have purchased
and continue with setup.
Once setup has been completed and you have been brought to the desktop
for the first time, run the install program from within Windows
Vista.
This time, type in your product key when prompted.
When asked whether to perform an Upgrade or Custom (advanced) install,
choose Custom (advanced) to perform a clean install of Vista. Yes,
this means that you will have to install Vista for a second time.
Once setup has completed for the second time, you should be able
to activate Windows Vista normally. You can also delete the Windows.old
directory which contains information from the first Vista install.
or follow this!
Here's a simplified overview of the steps that are required to clean-install
the upgrade version of Vista:
Step 1. Boot the PC from the Vista DVD.
Step 2. Select "Install
Now," but do not enter the Product Key from the Vista packaging. Leave the input box
blank. Also, turn off the option Automatically activate Windows
when I'm online. In the next dialog box that appears, confirm that
you really do want to install Vista without entering a Product
Key.
Step 3. Correctly indicate the version of Vista
that you're installing: Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, or
Ultimate.
Step 4. Select the "Custom
(Advanced)" install, not the "Upgrade" install.
Step 5. Vista copies files at length and reboots
itself one or more times. Wait for the install to complete. At
this point, you might think that you could "activate" Vista, but you can't. That's because you haven't installed the Vista upgrade
yet. To do that, run the DVD's setup.exe program again, but this
time from the Vista desktop. The easiest way to start setup again
is to eject and then reinsert the DVD.
Step 6. Click "Install
Now." Select Do not get the latest updates for installation. (You can check for these
updates later.)
Step 7. This time, do enter the Product Key from
the Vista packaging. Once again, turn off the option Automatically
activate Windows when I'm online.
Step 8. On this second install, make sure to select "Upgrade," not "Custom
(Advanced)." You're not doing a clean install now, you're upgrading to Vista.
Step 9. Wait while Vista copies files and reboots
itself. No user interaction is required. Do not boot from the DVD
when asked if you'd like to do so. Instead, wait a few seconds
and the setup process will continue on its way. Some DOS-like,
character-mode menus will appear, but don't interact with them.
After a few seconds, the correct choice will run for you automatically.
Step 10. After you click a button labeled Start
in the Thank You dialog box, Vista's login screen will eventually
appear. Enter the username and password that you selected during
the first install. You're done upgrading to Vista.
Step 11. Within 30 days, you must "activate" your
copy of Vista or it'll lose functionality. To activate Vista, click
Show more details in the Welcome Center that automatically displays
upon each boot-up, then click Activate Windows now. If you've dismissed
the Welcome Center, access the correct dialog box by clicking Start,
Control Panel, System & Maintenance, System. If you purchased a legitimate copy of Vista, it should
quickly activate over the Internet. (You can instead activate by
calling Microsoft on the phone, which avoids your PC exchanging
information with Microsoft's server.)
Windows
Vista prevents local administrators from using their administrator
powers over the network. This results in the inability
to remotely administer a computer using filesharing and tools that
use similar technology (such as the computer manager MMC snap-in
and the administrative shares, such as C$). However, this DOES NOT
affect Remote Desktop in any way.
To allow administrators
local to a computer to use their administrator powers when accessing
the Vista computer remotely, please follow these steps:
Click
start
Type: regedit
Press enter
In the left, browse to the following folder: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system\
Right-click a blank area in the right pane
Click New
Click DWORD Value
Type: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
Double-click the item you just created
Type 1 into the box
Click OK

Vista's Program Compatibility Wizard
1. Vista's graphics engine is one element guilty
of causing compatibility conflicts. Sometimes it will stop programs
from installing but, usually, you won't find out there's a problem
until after the installation is complete. If you're prompted to
check for updates online, this will often rectify the problem.
2. The Aero interface can also cause problems, preventing some older programs
from displaying correctly. However, if you can install the application
and launch it then Vista will deal with the problem automatically,
switching to the Vista Basic (non-Aero) interface while the program
runs.
3. If the problems are more complex, Vista's Program
Compatibility wizard will usually provide a fix -- with the exception
of low-level utilities, such as antivirus software. Open the Control
Panel and select the Programs icon to access Compatibility mode.
This deals with all aspects of running software on your PC.
4. When you click the Programs icon, you should
see a link that reads 'Use an older program with this version of
Windows'. This starts the Program Compatibility Wizard, which will
guide you through various features that may prevent your software
loading. This doesn't work with all apps, but it'll fix the vast
majority.
5. Browse to the problem application or choose
it from a list of the programs on your hard drive. Alternatively,
select CD-ROM for software that has not yet been installed. Click
Next and select the operating system you wish to emulate for this
application. You can choose anything from Windows 95 to XP.
6. The final stage of the wizard offers a series
of troubleshooting options to help get a program working. Options
include not using themes, running in basic screen mode and, tackling
the most likely culprit, the option to disable desktop composition.
A program may also require administrator privileges to run correctly.
Remote Differential Compression (RDC) allows data to be synchronized with a remote
source using compression techniques to minimize the amount of data
sent across the network.
Many pre-Windows Vista computers and devices are not compatible with RDC which
makes transferring files across a network slower for a Windows
Visa computer because it’s trying to use RDC. Like Remote Remedy? Disabling Remote Differential Compression
(RDC) in Windows Vista:
Open the Control Panel.
Open Programs and features.
Click Turn Windows features on or off.
Uncheck Remote Differential Compression. *also see/try RDP slow
